A Trivial Comedy for Serious People!

The story of two bachelors, John ‘Jack’ Worthing and Algernon ‘Algy’ Moncrieff, who create alter egos named Ernest to escape their tiresome lives. They attempt to win the hearts of two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men called Ernest. The pair struggle to keep up with their own stories and become tangled in a tale of deception, disguise and misadventure. The elaborate plot ridicules Victorian sensibilities with some of the best loved, and indeed bizarre, characters to be found on the modern stage.

Event- Discover Dublin in Detail – Street Wisdom

Location- Dublin City, O’ Connell Street

Description- What is it? At the centre of Street Wisdom lies the idea that every moment is extraordinary and every street is full of inspiration – that there’s no such thing as an ordinary street, just ordinary thinking. Few of us give ourselves time or permission to really focus on the signs and signals that we normally ignore, rich stimulus that can help us learn something new.

Street Wisdom takes place in three parts. First, a street guide helps you tune up your senses so you can pick up far richer information from the environment that you would normally. Then you’re off on a journey by yourself – your street quest – where you ask a question and see what answers present themselves. You don’t have to go far but it’s amazing what you can learn. In the final 60 minute session everyone gathers together to share what happened and, more often than not, wonder at how magical an ordinary street can become when you’re really aware of those hidden messages, chance meetings and unexpected discoveries.

In just three hours of walking and wandering, participants have resolved problems that have dogged them for years, found new business ideas, changed careers, discovered new directions, and learned how to deal differently with life and love.

Invented by creative maestro David Pearl in 2013 and developed with the help of business beatnik and fellow author Chris Baréz-Brown, Street Wisdom has rapidly grown into a global movement. Our mission is to make every street in every city a free source of inspiration for everyone, every single day.

Who is it for? It is relevant for anyone struggling with the day-to-day personal stuff, tackling a challenge in the workplace, figuring out what’s next, or seeking a creative breakthrough. Once experienced, it can be easily replicated on a personal basis, or taken into the workplace and used to inspire teams and individuals alike!

Event- The Gaudete Singers – Les Chansons des Roses

Location- Unitarian Church, 112 St. Stephen’s Green West

Description- This varied choral bouquet of floral music spans the last two centuries and features works by three living composers.

Morten Johannes Lauridsen is an American composer. A National Medal of Arts recipient (2007), he was composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale (1994–2001) and has been a professor of composition at the University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music for more than 40 years. Les Chansons des Roses are settings of poems by Rilke and the composer himself says

In addition to his vast output of German poetry, Rainer Maria Rilke (1875 – 1926) wrote nearly 400 poems in French. His poems on roses struck me as especially charming, filled with gorgeous lyricism, deftly crafted and elegant in their imagery. These exquisite poems are primarily light, joyous and playful, and the musical settings are designed to enhance these characteristics and capture their delicate beauty and sensuousness.

Grammy-winning composer and conductor Eric Whitacre is one of the most popular musicians of our time. His concert music has been performed throughout the world by millions of amateur and professional musicians alike, while his ground-breaking Virtual Choirs have united singers from over 110 different countries.

Three Flower Songs are settings of I Hide Myself (Dickinson) With a lily in your hand (Lorca) and Go, lovely rose (Waller). This last setting was the first piece that Whitacre ever wrote, completed in 1990 and first performed in 1991. The other two songs were written subsequently to complete the set for publication.

Born and bred in Aberdeen, Ed Jones began playing the organ when he was at Aberdeen University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree with First Class Honours in 2011 and finished a PhD in Musical Composition at Aberdeen in 2015. During his time as an undergraduate he was awarded the Ogston Music Making Award & the Chris Cadwur James Composition Award. He is the only music student ever to be awarded the Aberdeen City Quincentenary Prize. He has recently been appointed Assistant Organist at St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast.

This wonderful programme will be heard to good effect in the beautifully refurbished Unitarian Church, so come and enjoy some summery sounds of floral music and poetry.
